Jamaica Participates in Tri-Lateral Agreement on Biofuels

Jamaica has been named among a new group of countries to be included in the Tri-Lateral Co-operation in the area of Bio-fuels.

Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the world's leading producers of ethanol, Brazil and the United States of America (USA) on Thursday, November 20, 2008 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Jamaica's Energy Minister, Clive Mullings said at a time when Jamaica is creating a domestic demand for ethanol fuel, "participation in (the) tri-Lateral partnership (is) most opportune.  We are creating a domestic demand for ethanol fuel and it will allow us to preserve some socio economic stability while breaking our dependence on imported fossil fuel. He said Jamaica will grasp this opportunity and will use it well.

Minister Mullings added that “the technical assistance and support that the governments of Brazil and the United States of America has committed to provide within the framework of this MOU, will allow us to prepare the road map to satisfy our domestic demand from locally produced biofuels including bio diesel.”  He pointed out that Jamaica's participation in the MOU will propel the country further along the bio-fuels learning curve.

Participation in this MOU will facilitate Jamaica's involvement in the emerging global Biofuels Market and strengthen the country's move towards energy security, as the programme encourages domestic production and consumption of bio fuels.
