BACKGROUND
In March 2011, Energy Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) who
attended the Council for Organization Trade and Economic Development (COTED) -
Energy meeting underscored the need for urgent action at the national and
regional levels to address the escalating challenges associated with increasing
oil prices. In an effort to heighten awareness and provide information to the
regional populace on sustainable energy options and the need for greater
efficiency in the use of energy, the Meeting agreed to the institutionalization
of a CARICOM Energy Week (CEW) to be held from November 6 -12, 2011, and
thereafter on an annual basis during the second week of November for subsequent
years.
Commencing this year under the theme “Energy Security For A Sustainable Future”
CEW will stimulate thoughts, encourage discussions about key energy issues and
initiate action in the area of energy conservation and efficiency and renewable
energy. The week presents an opportunity to promote energy projects and outline
the government’s policy direction for the energy sector.
